Would It Be Acceptable for Me to Start a Photography “business”?
Question by : Would it be acceptable for me to start a photography “business”?
I’ve taken (and I’m currently taking) private photography lessons. I love it- It’s my passion! I’m the designated “family photographer” and take photos of my family all of the time. I put my heart into editing and spend lots of time going through my photos to make nice sets for everyone.
I’m really passionate about it and I constantly try to work at improving my “work”. I’m really looking to broaden my collection as I’ve mostly taken pictures only of my family and landscapes- it’s the same people over and over again! Hah. So I’m interested in starting a business- well not a real one, I wouldn’t charge anything at all, they’d get a CD to print the pictures themselves. I guess it’s not a business if I’m not making money, but does it sound like a good idea?
Also, how could I advertise my free “service”?
Thanks(:

It seems a good idea to me. Go and try it. After some time if you want to open “a real business” (like going to the weddings), you have a set of album photos beforehand, so people can judge your work and hire you. Good Luck!

No, it;s not a business if you aren;t charging and until you know what you are doing, you really shouldn;t charge but at the same time you don;t want to give your work away.
One thing you could do is join a photography club, they often have shoots with volounteers or models and this is a good chace for you to practice our art.
Something else you could do is register on sites like model mayhem. tere, you can advertise shoots or find models, makeup artists looking to do what is called a Time for Prints (TfP), an exchange of service where you get a model to practice with as well as pictures for your portfolio and the model gets images.
Just so you are aware, when you decide to “go pro”, you’ll need alot more gear than just a entyr level camera. If starting a business is in your plans, take that into consideration.
yes of course, you have a good idea and you are finally decided to open up a business here is a good website to start: http://www.earnfromyourphotos.com/how-to-start-a-photography-business/
Fabulously Informative!,
This book is incredibly informative for anyone thinking of delving into a photography business. There is so much great information in here! I work with photographers all day and I find myself handing over lots of these tidbits daily, it would be awesome to just hand each one of them this book and tell them to get back to me once they’ve read it :)
Well-organized and well-informed, this is a great book absolutely full of valuable information about many nuances and sidenotes that people don’t realize become a big part of their life if they’re starting a photography business. Many people think it’s just about taking pictures….and it’s not! Thank you for putting all of this great info in one spot Christie!

|Wonderful design of how to create a lasting family portrait business,
This book is full of great insight and ideas for how to incorporate a lasting family portrait business. Many photographer’s claim to have relationships with their clients, but Christie’s ideas really support how to nuture a relationship and become a photographer clients will naturally rave about as if they were all friends. She offers great behind the scenes tips to capturing natural light portraits, in her studio, in a clients home, and outdoors. For those just starting out, this is a great book to gain tips and tricks on not only planning, posing and styling a shoot, but what to do long after the session is completed. In time, I hope to gain the comfort of exploring newborn photography and will hold on to this book as a reference for when I do. There are ideas here that I would have never thought of when working with newborns and I now have a clue as to how those adorable poses are executed! She touches on the conversations to have with clients before their shoot and tips on how to interact during the shoot (especially with children) to make sure the client and the photographer are doing the best they can for the best results. I enjoyed her tips on how she builds a relationship that lasts over lifetimes beginning with expecting a child. Overall, a great book for those interested in pursuing family photography.
